A “Good” University Education

A “good” University Education is the one that

  1. Provides you a platform where you can learn build PRESTIGE rather than learn something.
  2. Prepares you to be a Professor who would not have to do much work in educating as students are already up for building prestige by willing to confirm the conformance model of education.
  3. Prepares you how to speak what others want to hear so that you could game your way into the corporate world and be a “consultant” or expert of some kind, without a significant contribution to the field.
  4. Prepares you how to make a nice shiny research proposal and then fund your research that’s not really going to help the world issues but does help you fund nice vacations in the Bahamas.
  5. Prepares you to prepare your junior colleagues to keep the culture going, keep the prestige going but never question the underlying prestige system.
  6. Gives you a “Doctor” title so that when you address to a mass of people and tell them you’re a Doctor, they believe you more ( Edward Bernays said himself, the inventor of the term “Public Relations”, watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6hH3roMe4w )
  7. Can be faked or bought online on a shiny paper ( Actually some weeks ago I reported such a website that sold certificates from famous Universities online, seems like desperate times to earn money for some people.)

I am still looking for alternative definitions. Have one?

Apart of the fact that most of the University Programs are just a bunch of Marketing spins, some institutions do value innovation and science, nevertheless, they are not big enough to address global issues that arise because of misguided messages that loom in the society. This does not mean there is no hope. Companies have started to realize that traditional schooling is no more a criterion to select talented people. Skills count, and skills can be acquired from anywhere on the web or in the world, without having to label it or vouch with some shiny papers. In some cases, doing a P.hD can be a good signal of competence and experience, however, my bias is that every problem is different, and our brains being the machines of associations, we quickly tend to recognize the familiarity of problems, and also the causality of solutions.
